Reimagining the Kaveri

Developed through exchanges at Science Gallery Bengaluru, this trilingual glossary brings

together multiple words through which one might know the river Kaveri. Multiple words—scientific, cultural, historical, legal, and ecological show how meanings, like rivers, are

shaped by time, use, and power. The result is not a definitive account but a layered, unstable,

and live dialogue through our shared attention.

Jahnavi Phalkey is the Founding Director of Science Gallery Bengaluru. She is a historian of science and technology, with research spanning the twentieth century history of science, public history, public policy and public engagement.

Science Gallery Bengaluru is a public institution for research-based engagement at the interface between the human, natural, and social sciences, and engineering, art, and design. They do so through exhibitions-led Public Engagement, a Mentorship Initiative, and a pioneering Public Lab Complex. Their founding partner is the Government of Karnataka. They draw on the intellectual capital of three of India’s leading research institutions: the Indian Institute of Science is our lead academic partner, and the National Centre for Biological

Sciences, and International Centre for Theoretical Sciences are our collaborating academic partners. Science Gallery Bengaluru is Asia’s first, India’s only, and the world’s largest member of the Global Science Gallery Network with sister galleries in London, Melbourne, and Monterrey. They are the only free-standing gallery in the network located outside the walls of a university.
